Latest Review :   "Visited here 10th April 2022 for a chicken Sunday dinner and I’m sat still here in the Mill stone writing this. Staff not very helpful didn’t even bother to ask how the meal was. Cost for 2 soft drinks and 2 Sunday lunches £40 pound which I don’t mind paying if it’s good but it was poor. The mash potato was the size of a baby’s hand, the Yorkshire pudding nearly broken my teeth, 2 small roast potato’s on the plate and 1 skinny carrot. Food was cold and I’m still hungry now it’s like a kids portion. Poooooor."

Latest Review :   "Visited with family 2 weeks ago. Service was very slow & the restaurant wasn’t full. 1 meal sent back as it was cold. Thought I’d give it another chance before posting a review. Went again tonight & the food has seriously gone downhill. The vegetables were either soggy or burned. Steak & ale pie was ok but tasted like frozen pastry. Really can’t understand why a chain pays a fortune for a restaurant, refurbishes when there is no need then serves sub standard food. Complete waste of money & won’t be returning."

Latest Review :   "Probably 1 of the worst meals I've seen presented at a restaurant in my life. Sausages and mash with garden peas , I asked specifically for mushy peas . 2 steaks ordered came out well done when they were ordered as medium rare and to top it all off we waited 1 hrs and 15 minutes for meals to be served. The mushy peas never arrived even after we mentioned it..and the steaks were well done. "

The staff were friendly, and professional. The pub has recently been renovated. It is nicely designed and comfortable. There is now a very large out door seating area with TV and bar access. I would reccomened a visit here, we will definately be returning. They also serve Sunday dinners which looked very good and is on my list to try."

Latest Review :   "Its quite a while since we have been here and i guess we wont be returning. My wife had cheese and onion pie, chips and beans. I had grilled sea bass, new potatoes and peas. The chips had been kept warmed for i dont know how long, and were soggy and inedible. The portion of pie was huge and was more suited for a builder not a woman. The sea bass was awful bland unseasoned and colourless. It was served with tinned new potatoes. "

We had no idea there was a disco on until 1am ? , we;ve stayed in many pubs B & Bs etc. this is the worst ever.  Latest Review :   " I visited here as a party of 4 last week and I was eager to show this place off to my friends. But what has happened!? On entering Thwaites pub we were greeted with the smell of rotting bins and an entrance full of fag ends and dirt! The place Is absolutely filthy, the toilets being some of the worst I’ve ever been in! A drinks order was taken on arrival but we waited 20 minutes to be served beer that tasted of chemicals and wine in a dirty glass. "

Latest Review :   "Got to say very dissatisfied with both meals and also thwaites pint of beer. The sausages can only be best described as bulk buy catering sausages normally found at a road side cafe, the mash was obviously premade and not warmed up properly and the less said about the over cooked tin peas and over cooked carrots the better. The gravy was watery powdered stuff with some onion added... My wife's lasagne honestly looked like a £1.89 Aldi microwave meal for one that had been flung onto a plate with a salad."

Latest Review :   "We ordered our food & we felt really let down by tbe standard off cooking. This food was not cooked by a chef & must of been cooked by a comedian, The steak was full of grizzle, the bread was rock hard, the pie was drier than a dessert & they had cooked the onoin rings in a yorkshire pudding mix. No background music .the room I went into with my companion was occupied by 3 couples and you could hear every conversation even if you don't want to.  Latest Review :   "The table looked like a small child had set the cutlery out. The floor was soaking wet, why it had been washed just before opening at midday is anyone’s guess, despite this, the floor was filthy. The place was generally grubby. I have eaten here many times before and it has been lovely, but something has changed. Main courses were over cooked, the service was dreadful. We had a midday sitting and were served our desert at 2.45 the guests arriving for the 3.00pm sitting were starting to leave."

Latest Review :   "Really disappointed. Food was inedible. The hot chilli nachos were really cold so we sent it back. They just warned it up in microwave, it was still cold and now soggy. I ordered a garlic naan bread, it was just a dry shop bought one with cold unmelted grated cheese on it and no garlic, not even warmed up. I sent it back to be heated up and it came back still cold and the cheese was still unmelted. The halloumi fries were cold n came with no dip. And a dried up burger for our son."

I have no idea either but they managed to do it. The food was appalling. My colleagues steak, which granted she asked for well-done could have replaced the sole of my boot.  Latest Review :   "Booked for a meal tonight and it was probably the worst pub I've eaten in. To start with was told there was 4 missing items of the 7 item menu!!! which left nothing to choose from, my partner had the chilli con carne which clearly was microwaved as had more water in the bottom than lake windermere, I had the sausage and mash (due to lack of choice) with seasonal veg which meant 4 runner beans. The music coming out of the kitchen was loud and more like def leopard on speed. "

Really good value

Held our wedding reception at this venue. Nothing was too much trouble and all ran smoothly, from the timing of the food courses being served, even allowing breaks when needed as the portion sizes were generous. Food was all lovely and commented on by all. Big thank you to Tom, Mark and all the staff.

Absolute rip-off

£25 to check in early? £25 to check out later? Because I used Booking.com, I had to also pay £10 to use the spa facility, which i did'nt, because you cant continue to use the spa after 11am on day of check out. Total con, and £17 for breakfast is truly obscene, I travelled alone but if your a family of 4 breakfast will set you back £68.00!!! Management obsessed with tricking customers out of anything they can. Pathetic actually. Plenty of other hotels in the area, use them instead.

Came hungry left even hungry!! Not good at all

Ordered a 'special' red tai curry worth £20. Came in a tiny dish, rock hard microwaved rice, raw slimy prawns and a huge dollop of cheap curry sauce. Both soup starters we had came cold and one tasted as though it was drenched in Sambuca! Came hungry left hungry. Expected so much better from other reviews but wont be returning anytime soon! Awful

A wonderful experience

My husband and I have just had a wonderful meal at this gastro pub. We chose the roast beef & Yorkshire pudding with vegetables. For dessert I had sticky toffee pudding with ice cream whilst my husband had rum & rain ice cream with a rum to pour over the top. Everything was freshly made (no frozen stuff) It was the best meal we have ever had in ages. We highly recommend paying the pub a visit but book a table first. Very friendly welcoming staff.

Terrible experience but never again.

Waited an hour for food with no apology. Kids pasta was cold. Ordered J20 which didn’t taste nice and was then told “their own version”. Children’s chicken and chips had 3 tiniest pieces of chicken I’ve ever seen. Staff were off hand and unprofessional. Ordered fish and chips. Fish like rubber, very dry and chips also dry. Children ordered fruit salad which was inedible and had to be returned. Again no apologies staff unprofessional.

Never ever have a meal here!

We ordered prawn and smoked salmon cocktail, which at £18:95 seemed a little expensive. What it comprised of was a small piece of smoked salmon and about 8 baby shrimps. ( Prawns they were not and even calling them shrimps would be a stretch.) All on a bed of lettuce. The chips that came with the main course were half cooked, tasteless and difficult to swallow. The linguine had almost the equivalent of two sliced chilli peppers hidden it which completely took away the delicate flavour of the crab

Not a good experience

First and last visit, Friday 5pm. Mt husband ordered fish and chips, the fish was small to say the least! I ordered gammon pineapple and egg. The egg was a rubber blob, chips dry and served with salad. We didn't stay for desert. We were asked if we enjoyed our meal when we went to pay! Our negative reply was "oh dear" ( with a smile) we weren't offered a stopper for our half bottle of wine that we decided to take home. We will not be returning.

Yuk

Went with my husband for cheese pie special, sat looking around and it was dirty. Dead flies on the windows ledge and carpet needed a vac. Ask for condiments and brown sauce and ketchup came squirted on a plate and looked lumpy.tasted it and was disgusting. The cheese pie was made with blue cheese( not written on the menu) so I didn't like that. Pleasant service but overall experience was like a greasy jeans!

Awful experience

From 2hour waits for food to rude waiting in staff it became laughable, one evening I saw two people come back into the hotel and sit down and eat a Mac Donald’s and KFC both on different tables in a 4star rated hotel. I Suspect either the staff are terrified of the chef or the staff don’t communicate with the chef. After all is said and done despite the lovely decor I would avoid this place if you are looking for a 4star stay it’s more like faulty towers than a four star hotel and such a shame

Made a telephone booking for four adults one baby for sat evening made them aware re allergies etc I was told no problem I asked for a quiet table with room for a pram again no problem the table was booked for 8pm a little later I recieved a phone call from the staff making me aware that the kitchen closes at 8pm which in my experience is unheard of they also informed me that a disco was starting at 8 30 pm (coincidence?) In other words it was pointless us going really.

Home cooked food at its best

This is a lovely little pub, with lovely home cooked food. The menu has plenty for everyone, and there is a specials board each day. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. . Whilst there is a large car park across road, it can be a bit tricky crossing the road at bust times.

Disgusting service and food contamination

We decided to visit the The Royal after a family walk and ordered 3 meals. We ordered the firecracker chicken as part of our meals. In the salad was a large feather beneath the salad. When we approached the staff the bar lady was kind and polite and took the plate away. What happened next was disgusting. The manger rudely came over and stated that this was not his fault and he wouldn't be offering a replacement

Great village pub.

I’d heard very good things about the new management. The service was friendly, the food was absolutely brilliant. Good wholesome pub food. I had the steak pie which was lovely, with a lovely rich gravy. All plates cleared. We will definitely return, I think if this is the standard, the other pubs in the area should be worried. Thanks again. We will definitely return.

Well situated but otherwise poor.

Room service poor- some food undercooked. Requested a ground floor room and had this confirmed by the hotel. Arrived to be given a room on floor 3 with no option to move. Room and communal areas very dated. Various stains in room. Communication with the spa very poor. Not enough staff at breakfast causing delays and inaccuracies in orders for group. For the cost of the room I would expect a better standard. Noise from other rooms was distracting.

Very disappointed. Not the hotel it used to be.

Most of staff were indifferent at best and miserable at worst. Had to chase tidying up and preparation of room every day. Public area toilets were in a poor state. Annoyed that a separate payment was required to use the pool in what is supposed to be a spa hotel. Service was slow. The hotel lacked any form of front of house leadership or motivation or support. Nothing made us feel like we would like to come to Cottons again

Very disappointed, bad slow service

We had booked a table for a party of 10 to round off a weekend away celebrating friends 40th birthdays. Having walked for an hour to get to the pub we were very thirsty and ordered drinks which we had to wait 15 minutes for. We then ordered food with a couple of nibble plates to keep us going. An hour and a half after arriving we still didn't have our main courses. The pub did not appear that busy.

Food Poisoning at 4 star hotel.

My partner and I stayed one night at this 4 star hotel last weekend. We both had dinner in the restaurant. About midnight my partner was suddenly feeling sick and was up all night throwing up. Not the weekend away we had planned. I was Ok although I think it was because I had a cooked started and she had a selection from the chefs cold table. I did tell the reception on checkout and they said they were sorry but that was it.
